BA(Hons) Ceramic Project

My work is inspired by two Japanese martial arts; Aikido and the Samurai warrior. I trained for two years developing my aikido skills, which includes energy, dynamism, strength and flow of movement. I make large scale wheel-thrown sculptural vessels, which express dynamic energy, and the centrifugal force experienced in the movement of Aikido.

While the throwing wheel is slowing rotating I strike the vessel with a sword to emphasis this dynamic circular movement. I use two very different materials, which communicate strength and movement: brick clay for structure and porcelain for decoration.
